To Gi, or not to Gi


As all classes at Bolton Catch BJJ are in Gi. The question that continues to occur year after year is: 'Does Gi training benefit your overall No-Gi game?!' Hopefully a few answers to the question...
(Also bear in mind that the majority of UFC champions are BJJ Black Belts who regularly train in a gi)

=> Using the Gi lessens physicall attributes such as strength and speed, this forces you to rely more on technique

=> Your submission defense will improve

=> You can be more creative (offensively)

=> You are forced to work more on your posture

=> Your ability to put pressure on the right areas to maintain positions will be much higher. eg areas like the diaghram, femur, jaw, and other not so obvious spots.

=> In a gi you have more options for open guard which is all about shrimping, framing, and most importantly knee rotation

=> It will improve your base (when passing the guard)

=> It will improve your escapes from dominant positions

We hope these points can help you understand that training in a Gi can also benefit to No-Gi training too!
